Built by Community, Rooted in Culture.
Bamboo Roots works alongside the Karenni Community of Winston-Salem to support Karenni, refugee, and immigrant communities through cultural preservation, wellness, education, and community connection.
Bamboo Roots is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community-based organization dedicated to nurturing community growth by preserving and celebrating cultural heritage while supporting and empowering Karenni, refugee, and immigrant communities through culturally responsive programs, wellness initiatives, advocacy, education, cultural preservation, resource navigation, and community engagement.
Our goal is to build a stronger, more connected community where individuals and families thrive, future generations maintain a strong cultural identity, and everyone has access to the support, resources, and opportunities they need to succeed.
Who Are the Karenni?
The Karenni are an ethnic minority group originally from Karenni State (Kayah State) in Myanmar (Burma). Due to decades of civil war and conflict, many Karenni families were forced to flee their homes and resettle in refugee camps and countries around the world, including the United States.
Many Karenni families began resettling in Winston-Salem, North Carolina around 2009. Today, the Karenni community continues to preserve its language, culture, traditions, and identity while building new lives and strengthening community connections for future generations.
